My previous fertility treatment has failed
A failed cycle is not the end of the journey, but it is the right moment to pause, debrief, and decide what changes before the next attempt. The pause is the work. Going straight back into another cycle without analysis often produces another disappointing outcome for the same reason.
The debrief consultation
Schedule a dedicated review with your fertility specialist 2 to 4 weeks after the failed cycle, when emotion has cooled and the lab data is in. Bring your records. Ask: what do we think happened, what does the data suggest, and what would change in the next protocol or approach.
Common reasons for failure, by frequency
Embryo factors are the most common – chromosomal abnormality, low blastulation, single-embryo cycle with bad luck. Endometrial factors – thin lining, displaced window of implantation, undiagnosed chronic endometritis. Egg or sperm quality. Implantation-site factors. Sometimes nothing identifiable – a normal cycle that simply did not work.
Investigations worth considering after failure
If you have not had: hysteroscopy, expanded immune and clotting workup, chronic endometritis screen, sperm DNA fragmentation test, or for repeated implantation failure, an ERA. Not all of these for everyone – your doctor should explain which apply to your situation specifically.
The emotional protocol
Grieve the cycle as a real loss before planning the next one. Many couples need 4 to 8 weeks before they are ready to commit again. Tell your partner what kind of support you need; it may not match what they instinctively offer. Avoid pregnancy announcements on social media for a week or two if needed.
Questions worth asking your doctor
- What does the data from our failed cycle suggest as the likely reason?
- What investigations would meaningfully refine our next approach?
- What protocol changes are you considering for the next cycle?
- How long should we wait before starting again, and why?
